FAIRNESS · RESPECT · PUBLIC TRUST
Good policing and equal treatment belong together.
Every day, police officers work to keep communities safe. Their responsibilities can be demanding, and effective law enforcement is essential to a functioning society.
Equally important is ensuring that police checks are conducted fairly, explained clearly, and carried out with respect for everyone involved.
These principles are not competing priorities. They strengthen one another.
The Dutch National Police already has a framework called Professioneel Controleren, which promotes objective selection, clear explanations, respectful interaction and professional reflection.
In October 2025, the police published research identifying gaps in officers' familiarity with this framework. This demonstrates the importance of translating established standards into consistent everyday practice.
We invite Dutch police leadership and relevant public authorities to continue strengthening the practical implementation of professional police-checking standards, with particular attention to three priorities.
Support consistent application of existing professional standards, with decisions based on objective facts, relevant circumstances and lawful policing grounds.
Encourage clear explanations during police interactions wherever appropriate, so citizens understand what is happening and officers can carry out their duties with confidence and mutual respect.
Encourage continued training, accessible information about existing complaint procedures, and public communication about progress in implementing professional police-checking standards.
Fair treatment protects individual rights. Professional standards support police officers. Constructive dialogue builds confidence between institutions and the communities they serve.
Respect and public safety can move forward together.
By supporting this petition, you encourage the consistent application of existing standards, constructive communication and continued improvement in police-community relations.
Fairness builds trust. Trust strengthens communities.

Subject: Fair Police Checks, Clear Communication, Stronger Trust
Dear Dutch Police Leadership,
Effective policing is essential to public safety. Equally important is ensuring that police checks are conducted fairly, professionally, and with respect for everyone involved.
Through this petition, we encourage Dutch police leadership and relevant public authorities to strengthen the consistent application of professional police-checking standards.
We respectfully call for three priorities:
1. Fair and Consistent Police Checks
Promote the consistent application of objective, lawful, and professional criteria during police checks, ensuring fair treatment for everyone.
2. Clear and Respectful Communication
Encourage officers to provide understandable explanations during police interactions wherever operational circumstances permit, strengthening mutual understanding and respect.
3. Transparency, Learning, and Public Trust
Support continued professional training, accessible information about complaint procedures, and constructive dialogue between police authorities and communities.
These priorities are complementary. Effective law enforcement, equal treatment, and public confidence should strengthen one another.
We respectfully invite the relevant authorities to consider these requests and communicate how existing professional standards are being implemented and evaluated.
Fairness builds trust. Trust strengthens communities.
Respectfully,
CA Team
